How Did He Get Here? A Tale of Nonviolent Protestor Turned Congressman
“The joke is, you walk into the capitol, look around, and you’re like, ‘How did I get here?’” chuckles twenty-six-year-old Representative Maxwell Frost. “Then you spend a few months listening to some of your colleagues, and you’re like, ‘How the hell did they get here?’”
Frost, affectionately known as “the first Gen Z member of Congress,” burst into the public eye after his bold involvement in the March for Our Lives movement following the Parkland school shooting. He certainly knows how to make an entrance. Notably, when he was sworn into office, he cheekily tweeted side by side his official congressional photo and a mug shot from his arrest during a Black Lives Matter protest following George Floyd’s murder. Talk about a powerful statement!
Here’s a taste of what Frost has witnessed since joining Capitol Hill: the debt-ceiling debacle, the reversal of affirmative action, state bans on critical race theory, and as if that’s not enough, he’s even been exposed to Hunter Biden’s nudes. “Marjorie Taylor Greene literally held up blown-up pictures of someone’s dick pics,” Frost exclaims with wide eyes. Congressional drama has reached new heights, or should we say lows?
Our conversation takes place during Congress’s traditional August recess, right in the middle of a bustling day. Frost, adopted at birth in 1997, was raised in Orlando by his mother, a special education teacher and Cuban refugee, and his musician father. Meeting him in his hometown, he looks remarkably fresh-faced for someone who had to rise at 5:30 A.M. We can’t help but wonder how he manages to maintain such youthful vigor.

Right now, Frost’s priorities lie in expanding access to the arts and improving public housing and transportation in Orlando. Impressively, within just seven months, all his funding proposals were approved by the Appropriations Committee, securing a whopping $11.3 million to invest in his community. That’s no small feat, especially when your colleagues seem to be, well, characters to say the least. But Frost refuses to take the bait. “I see the humanity in all my colleagues, even the ones that say some of the most disgusting things I’ve ever heard,” he admits with a thoughtful expression. “It doesn’t mean I give them a pass for it. Understanding their humanity actually helps me as an organizer—understand the way forward.”
So what is the way forward? “I think hope is good, but it’s more than hope,” he ponders. “I know that we will be successful in this work because I know we’re in it for the long haul. I know we have the people on our side, and I know that time is on our side.” With such determination and optimism, Frost is a force to be reckoned with on Capitol Hill.
