The Ultimate Saw Universe Guide
The Ultimate Saw Universe Guide

So, you want to embark on a journey into the twisted and bloody franchise that is Saw? Well, my friend, you better buckle up because it’s gonna be a wild ride! But fear not, for I am here to guide you through this maze of torture and riddles, with a touch of humor and a sprinkling of positivity. Because let’s be honest, who doesn’t enjoy a good laugh while watching people suffer?
Now, the logical choice would be to start with the first Saw film, right? Well, hold that thought, because the events of the first movie aren’t actually the true beginning of the series. Oh no, horror’s devious mastermind, Jigsaw, had been teaching his twisted life lessons long before that. Enter Saw II, where we witness Jigsaw at full force, spewing ominous riddles and confusing the hell out of some poor cops. Trust me, this movie has it all: memorable traps (hello, needle pit!) and the first appearance of Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Eric Matthews. The poor guy gets trapped in a house filled with deadly nerve gas, alongside a bunch of people he wrongfully convicted. Talk about a bad day at the office!
Now that you’ve had a taste of the sadistic fun, it’s time to go back to where it all began. Saw, the movie that started this whole bloody saga. We meet Dr. Lawrence Gordon and Adam, who wake up in a disgusting bathroom and are forced to work together to unravel the twisted game they’re trapped in. Ah, Jigsaw and his philosophy of live in agony or die in even more agony. Good times! And let’s not forget about Amanda, Jigsaw’s future protege, who makes a brief appearance and leaves us questioning how Dr. Gordon’s pen ended up in a Saw trap. But don’t worry, everything will be explained in some insane retcon in a later sequel. Because, you know, loose threads are not allowed in the Saw-verse.
Moving on to Saw III, where we delve deeper into the relationship between Jigsaw and Amanda. Turns out, Amanda has been breaking the rules by setting up traps that are impossible to escape. I mean, even in the world of Jigsaw, isn’t every trap a death sentence? But Jigsaw is a stickler for his own twisted rules, so he tasks Amanda with a mission to kidnap a surgeon and force her to perform brain surgery on him. And let me tell you, brain surgery turns out to be just as horrifying as those rib-ripping traps. It’s a real treat for the senses!
Are you still with me? Good, because we’re just getting started. Saw IV opens with an autopsy of John Kramer himself, who’s definitely pushing up daisies… or is he? This movie is all about flashbacks and confusion, as we follow Officer Rigg through his own Jigsaw test while two FBI agents investigate the traps. And just when you think you’ve got a grasp on things, the movie throws a curveball by revealing Detective Hoffman as Jigsaw’s third apprentice. Oh, and did I mention that everything happening here is a flashback that takes place at the same time as Saw III? Yeah, it’s a lot to process, but don’t worry, we press on.

Now, let’s take a little detour from the main series and dive into Spiral: From the Book of Saw. This spinoff stars Chris Rock as a detective caught up in a copycat Jigsaw killer case. It’s a slightly less insane Saw experience, but still true to the franchise’s gnarly formula. And the icing on the cake? Samuel L. Jackson in a Saw trap. Because who doesn’t want to see him shouting expletives while trying to escape certain death?
Phew, take a deep breath, my friend, because we’re halfway through the Saw Cinematic Universe. Saw V picks up where Saw III/IV left off, with Hoffman as the hero and Agent Strahm onto his shady activities. The real fun starts when five people wake up tied to a cleaver, all connected to an arson case. Trust me, you don’t want to be in their shoes…or rather, strapped to their necks. Meanwhile, Strahm confronts Hoffman about his ties to Jigsaw, leading to a showdown that ends in a crushing way for Strahm. But fear not, Hoff baby is now free to be the psycho killer of his dreams. Bravo, Hoffman!
Are you still craving more Saw madness? Well, you’re in luck because Saw VI is here to satisfy your torturous desires. This time, Hoffman believes he’s free to continue his kidnap-murder spree, all while a corrupt insurance executive finds himself at the center of Jigsaw’s tests. Nope, Jigsaw’s reach doesn’t end with death, as we learn that Dr. Jill Tuck and even poor old Dr. Gordon were complicit in his schemes. I tell you, the retcons in this franchise are mind-boggling, but in a strangely delightful way.
And speaking of mind-boggling, it’s time to unravel the mysteries of Jigsaw (2017). Set a decade after John Kramer’s death, dead bodies start popping up in Jigsaw fashion. But wait, isn’t Jigsaw supposed to be dead? Fear not, my friend, this is Saw, where anything is possible. Turns out, there’s a brand-new Jigsaw successor in town, Logan, who was actually spared by Jigsaw after a test gone wrong. Yes, Jigsaw saved his life instead of torturing him. The twist that rattles your brain amongst all the twisted traps. Can you handle it?
Last but not least, we have Saw 3D. Don’t be fooled by the 3D gimmick, because this movie is not the grandest entry in the series. It’s bad, in a “why are there so many unnecessary close-up shots of cleavage” kind of way. But fear not, there are still some fun moments to be had, including Jigsaw’s favorite bathroom and a slow-clapping Dr. Gordon. And let’s not forget that delightful reveal that Dr. Gordon has been Jigsaw’s silent accomplice all along. Oh, the wonders of retcons!
Well, my dear reader, we’ve reached the end of our gruesome journey through the Saw franchise. I hope you’ve enjoyed the blood, the traps, and the mind-bending twists as much as I have. Now, go forth and spread the gospel of Jigsaw, and remember, it’s all just a game. Live, laugh, and love…in agony, of course!
