Ah, the Republicans in Wisconsin, always finding creative ways to be a national disgrace! This time, they thought it would be a brilliant idea to threaten the impeachment of Justice Janet Protasiewicz, who had been overwhelmingly voted in by the liberal majority. As expected, this sparked scorn and vitriol from all directions, leaving Assembly Speaker Robin Vos without his trusty HazMat suit. Poor guy.

But fear not, for Vos, being the master of compromise, came up with a classic Republican solution! Drumroll, please… Let’s allow the “bipartisan” State Legislative Bureau to draw new election maps! Sounds fair, right? Well, not really. Because surprise, surprise, the approval of these new maps would still lie in the hands of the ludicrously gerrymandered legislature themselves.

Governor Tony Evers wasn’t fooled for a second. With the speed of a cheetah, he shot down the whole idea, stating that he couldn’t trust a Legislature that repeatedly violates the basic tenets of democracy. “And I’m not going to participate in enabling Republicans in the Legislature to keep trying to use and abuse their power to control the outcome of our elections,” he boldly declared.

Oh, but wait! This underhanded Republican scheme was supposedly modeled after Iowa’s system. Democrats there nervously eyed the situation and kept their fingers crossed. To their surprise, the maps produced by the new mechanism passed the legislature with flying colors. Hallelujah!

Of course, the Democrats in Wisconsin weren’t buying it. They’ve seen enough bad faith to last a lifetime. In Iowa, both sides at least pretend to honor a fair process, but in Wisconsin, it’s a whole different ballgame. As Governor Evers rightly pointed out, there’s absolutely no reason for the Democrats to trust the grotesquely unbalanced Republican majority on anything, especially when it comes to redistricting.

Just a week ago, these same Republicans were threatening to impeach Justice Protasiewicz before she even had a chance to hear any cases. Now, they want to act all reasonable and maintain a status quo that deserves every ounce of derision and vitriol it has received since Wisconsin lost control of its soul.

Keep fighting the good fight, Wisconsin. Your toga-wearing, map-drawing buddies in Iowa are rooting for you! And remember, in the midst of all this madness, let’s not forget to laugh, because sometimes, the absurdity of it all is just too ridiculous to take seriously.

So, until the next plot twist in the never-ending saga of Wisconsin politics, stay beautiful, fashionable, and most importantly, stay sane!
