When news first broke that Jonathan Scott proposed to Zooey Deschanel in Scotland with a unique engagement ring, the internet couldn’t help but be intrigued. The ring featured a silver band with clear, silver, and purple flower-shaped stones. Well, it turns out that the credit for this interesting choice actually goes to Deschanel herself!

During their first interview as an engaged couple, Scott explained that he paid close attention to Deschanel’s jewelry taste, and even had the ring picked out a year prior to the proposal. “I immediately screen-grabbed [the ring] and held onto it for a long time,” Scott revealed. “That was the one she got.”

But of course, there were still a couple of hiccups along the way. Scott admitted, “I measured so badly. I was trying to figure out what ring size…” He jokingly turned to Zooey and asked, “What ring size is a woman?” To which Zooey playfully responded, “I’m a 4.75. That’s my ring size in case anybody wants to buy me a ring.” Scott quickly shut down any potential gifters by stating, “Better not. She’s off the market.”

In addition to the ring story, the interview also shed light on the sweet involvement of Zooey’s children on the big day. The couple, who had been dating for four years, revealed how Zooey’s kids made the proposal even more memorable.

“I didn’t want to decide what was happening until I knew,” Zooey shared when reminiscing about the proposal. To which Scott added, “And then the kids pulled a banner out that said, ‘Zooey, will you marry me?’” Elsie, one of Zooey’s daughters, excitedly exclaimed, “Did you just get married?” The couple clarified that they were engaged, but Elsie wasted no time asking, “Does that mean I get to be a flower girl?” The answer, of course, was a resounding “Yes!”
