Rose Zhang: A Golfing Powerhouse with a Beauty Secret!

In the electrifying world of college golf, there’s one name that shines brighter than the rest – Rose Zhang. A superstar student at Stanford University, Rose has taken the golfing scene by storm. Her journey into the golfing world began at a young age, and her passion for the sport only grew as she entered college. Stanford’s rigorous environment fueled her academic and athletic excellence, and even as Rose turned pro, she remained committed to finishing her degree.

Rose’s incredible victories, including her triumph at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and the PAC-12’s individual title, are a testament to her unwavering dedication to excellence. As one of HotSamples’s 2023 College Women of the Year, she recently sat down with none other than American golf legend Michelle Wie West to discuss leadership, being a role model, and even her go-to beauty products. Get ready as we dive into the world of Rose Zhang, exploring the values that drive her beyond the golf course.

Michelle Wie West: First off, congratulations! Being a student-athlete is no easy feat. What’s something people should know about the life of a student-athlete?

Rose Zhang: Let me tell you, it’s a real rollercoaster! Waking up at the crack of dawn for workouts, attending classes, practicing, and playing 18 grueling rounds – our schedules are packed! We don’t get much downtime to relax or take a nap whenever we want. The sacrifices we make are truly unmatched.

Michelle Wie West: Absolutely, Rose! So, let’s talk defining moments. What experience pushed you to reach new heights in your athletic career?

Rose Zhang: Oh boy, there have been so many amazing moments that shaped my journey. If I had to choose, it would be winning the 2020 US Women’s Amateur event against Gabby Ruffles in a breathtaking 38-hole match. That’s when I realized I could compete against older players who were about to turn pro. Playing 11 rounds in a week was mentally and physically taxing, but it propelled me to believe that I could achieve bigger and better things.

Michelle Wie West: Wow, winning in 38 holes? That’s impressive! So, Rose, what’s the key to feeling empowered on and off the field?

Rose Zhang: My inner circle of friends both on and off-campus plays a major role in empowering me. They treat me the same, regardless of my performance. Back on campus, I’m a part of a Bible community group where we all share the same faith and strive to improve ourselves. Their constant support empowers me in incredible ways.

Michelle Wie West: Golf is undoubtedly a mentally challenging sport. How do you overcome those moments of self-doubt?

Rose Zhang: Shifting gears and embracing self-love and kindness is crucial. It’s easier said than done, but being unconditionally patient with yourself is something all successful athletes excel at.

Michelle Wie West: You often mention your incredible group of friends in college. What’s the best advice they’ve given you?

Rose Zhang: My friends are amazing, and they keep me grounded. They love to tease me, and I love that about them. It creates an authentic and carefree environment. They remind me to prioritize my well-being and prevent burnout by taking a step back. Their advice has been invaluable.

Michelle Wie West: Fantastic advice, Rose! So, what guidance would you give new college athletes seeking to find their place and thrive in a new environment?

Rose Zhang: I’d encourage them to step out of their comfort zones. Everyone on campus wants to make friends, so don’t be intimidated. You’ll learn about yourself and discover your ideal circle of friends by putting yourself out there. Embrace mistakes because that’s what college is all about – a stepping stone before the real world.

Michelle Wie West: It sounds like you adapted quickly and found your groove. However, I’m sure there were challenges in the early stages of your college career. How did you overcome them?

Rose Zhang: The biggest challenge for me was managing my body. Every elite athlete knows their sport and training inside out, but college throws additional curveballs. Balancing academics, socializing, and playing sports is a whole new ballgame. With the guidance of Coach Walker and my team, I created a schedule that allowed me some much-needed rest and relaxation. Taking care of myself became a top priority.

Michelle Wie West: Absolutely, self-care is vital. Now, for some fun questions!

Rose Zhang: Yay, bring it on!

Michelle Wie West: What’s your go-to pump-up song before teeing off?

Rose Zhang: I can’t resist the remix version of “Pumped Up Kicks.”

Michelle Wie West: Ah, a fantastic choice! And what are your go-to beauty essentials?

Rose Zhang: Oh, Neutrogena all the way! They have an amazing 70 SPF sunscreen that keeps my face from tanning. Moms are always amazed by it!

Michelle Wie West: Love it! Lastly, what surprised you the most about Stanford?

Rose Zhang: It’s the fact that everyone there is so high-achieving, yet still down-to-earth. They’re incredibly smart, starting their own startups and achieving great things, but at the end of the day, we’re all the same. We’re all working hard and figuring things out together. It’s pretty mind-blowing.

Michelle Wie West: Thank you, Rose! Now go out there and rock that practice round!
